In the effort to make ends meet, people will do just about anything to make money. Jobs and work often get confused to mean the same, while they are not, although both make money. So, what is the difference between job and work?

Job primarily refers to a paid position, while work can either be paid or unpaid or done in exchange for goods and services. Job is a  specific task done as part of the routine of one’s occupation, while work involves mental and physical effort. 

What is a job?

 A job is a paid position that someone holds and often includes benefits like vacation days, health insurance, and retirement plans. It is also known as an occupation, trade, or career. People usually have to apply for jobs and are often assigned tasks by their boss or supervisor.

A worker’s responsibility is to perform the tasks assigned to them, and they are usually held accountable for their work. Jobs often require workers to follow specific rules and guidelines. Many jobs also have a set schedule that workers must adhere to them.

Once hired, an individual gets into a contract with an employer. This contract specifies the worker’s duties and the compensation they will receive in return for their work. Job is offered in three forms;    


The purpose of this job is to provide on-the-job training for the individual to be hired for a full-time position eventually. Internships are often unpaid, and they usually last for a set period. These jobs are often used to “try out” an occupation to see if it is the right fit before making a long-term commitment.

Students or recent graduates mostly take it up. The internship allows students to learn and gain experience in their desired field. A good example is a lawyer who interned at a law firm.

Part-time Job

This form of employment takes fewer hours per week compared to a full-time job. They are often taken up by students, retirees, or people already employed full-time but looking for a way to earn extra money. Part-time jobs can be seasonal, temporary, or permanent. Examples include working at a retail store during the holiday season or being a waiter/waitress at a restaurant.

Full-time job

A full-time job takes up most of an individual’s time and is often considered a career. Full-time jobs usually include benefits like vacation days, health insurance, and retirement plans. People who work full-time are expected to perform a set number of hours per week and often have a schedule they must adhere to. A good example is a doctor who works at a hospital.
